AWARD COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Review nominations/technical papers that are eligible for one of SAE's many awards. Members will review, score and select a recipient, based on established criteria for each award.

Commitment varies based on the particular award. The member should be able to participate in the review/selection process and meet set deadlines. Members should also be able to participate in conference calls if deemed necessary.

LOCAL CHAPTERS/SECTION OFFICERS
Leading their local SAE organization is the primary purpose of the section chairperson and officers. The degree of enthusiasm and the ability to inspire cooperation of others and the membership largely determines the success of the local section.

The chair and officers should at all times ensure that the aims and objectives of the local section and its programs are in harmony with the objectives of SAE as defined in the SAE Bylaws.

Can range from 4-6 hours a month or more

STUDENT CHAPTER LEADERS
Serve as a key representative of your school's SAE student chapter by promoting a respectable image of the chapter and your university; communicating regularly with members, officers, and advisors; and contribute to the common goal of increasing student projects, activities, and SAE membership. Develop or enhance leadership skills in a relaxed, non-threatening environment. Recruiters are interested in hiring students who have additional experiences outside the classroom and the SAE Collegiate Chapter is an excellent vehicle to obtain this!

A WORLD IN MOTION® CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS (K-12 Education)

COMPANY REPRESENTATIVES
Serve as a focal point or information resource for SAE members and non-members at your work site; play an important role in communicating the importance of being involved with SAE, as well as promoting the value of membership and the products and services SAE has to offer. Responsibilities can include signing up new members, member retention, routing timely notices, supplying necessary forms, and answering questions that your co-workers may have about SAE programs and activities.

COLLEGIATE DESIGN SERIES VOLUNTEERS

RULES COMMITTEE MEMBER
Develop all portions of the rules involving the engineering design, technical and materials requirement of the vehicle as well as the individual event procedures and scoring formulas.

DESIGN JUDGE
Assess both what was designed and why it was designed by student teams; interact with the students who will answer questions about the vehicle's design and quality; evaluate vehicles in several areas such as innovation, suspension, operator comfort, structure and serviceability.

Approximately two to three 10-hour days (possibly weekends and holidays)

DESIGN REPORT JUDGE
Evaluate the written technical report submitted by the student teams. These reports are typically assessed on content, completeness, explanatory value, logic, accuracy, supporting documentation, references, plans, etc.

Time Commitment:
Distributed to judges five to six weeks prior to the competition. This must be completed by the start of the event.

COST JUDGE (Formula SAE)
Inspect the cars from a predetermined and assigned group of schools to confirm that the car and the costs assigned to the car in the cost report fairly represent the actual costs for such a prototype. Additionally the cost judges evaluate the team's knowledge of the manufacturing processes and associated costs of two vehicle component picked at random from a list published in the Formula SAE rules. Captain and Assistant Captains may be available, please note if you are interested.

DESIGN JUDGE (Formula SAE)
Evaluate both (a) the design of the team's vehicle and (b) the team's knowledge of engineering design as applied to autocross vehicles and their ability to justify their design decisions. Judges will review design papers prior to event, judge teams onsite, and discuss judge impressions within the judging team to provide team feedback. Captain and Assistant Captains may be available, please note if you are interested.

ORAL PRESENTATION JUDGE
The objective of the oral presentations is for the student teams to convince a hypothetical manufacturing firm to produce their design. Volunteers will judge several of these presentations on various grading criteria including content, organization, visual aids, and delivery. Judges will interact with teams by asking them difficult questions about their marketing plan.

Time Commitment:
One 10-hour day (possible weekends and holidays)

TECHNICAL INSPECTOR
Assist with the technical inspection of vehicles and safety. This could include acting as a scribe, timing, checking for details, or anything else they may need.

FUEL STATION VOLUNTEER
Fuel all vehicles prior to tilt test and additionally during the dynamic events on Friday and Saturday. You will carry out the fuel measurements required before and after the Endurance and Fuel Economy Event on Saturday. Captain and Assistant Captains may be available, please note if you are interested.

One to four days (during Formula SAE event)

COMPETITION COURSE WORKER
Assist with all operating aspects of the events:

Baja: Acceleration, Land Maneuverability, Water Maneuverability, Suspension & Traction, Pulling Event, Mud Bogg, Hill Climb, Rock Crawl, Endurance, Brake & Practice (these responsibilities may include Scoring/ Timing, Flagger, Corner Worker, Carnage Crew, or Refueling Area)

Formula SAE: Acceleration, Skidpad, Autocross, Endurance, Brake and Practice (these responsibilities may include Scoring/Timing, Flagger, Corner Worker, Carnage Crew)

Time Commitment:
At event, approximately two to three 10-hour days (possibly weekends and holidays)

COMPETITION GENERAL VOLUNTEER
Help with the general needs of the event, including hosting, food and water distribution, and event equipment and material distribution. Other tasks include directing parking and setting up and cleaning up on event days. If you have limited or no prior experience with the CDS events, this is a great way to get involved!

Time Commitment:
Anywhere from a few hours to a few 10-hour days (possible weekends and holidays)

Mentor students and promote the value of SAE membership by:
  • Describing the value proposition of SAE to students, other faculty and university administration
  • Encouraging students to:
  • Nominating students for various awards and recognition as appropriate
  • Sharing information with other Faculty Advisors and CDS Team Advisors
  • Encouraging graduating students to transfer to professional membership
  • Helping CDS teams recruit new members, stay on schedule, find sponsorships, network with other teams (both on campus and other universities)
  • Traveling to CDS events with student teams as appropriate

Time Commitment:
Varies from a minimum of a few hours a week or more, especially with Collegiate Design Series Advisors
